"The Livermore lynching is unusual because it is the only one I have come across that took place inside a theatre, but it also reproduces a pattern. First, it gathers the community in a ritual that affirms racial divisions, and second, it stages scenes of extreme violence. Indeed the violence of racially motivated lynching goes hand in hand with the aim to make a spectacle out of the victim and to make that spectacle available for public consumption."
