Back in 2002 I photographed these Afghan girls who were given the opportunity to go to school and dream of a different future. Today that future is uncertain with the Taliban once again in control of the country. From 1996 to 2001, the Taliban severely restricted the roles of women, who were barred from taking most jobs while girls were prohibited from going to school, including homeschooling. For many Afghans, that legacy of repression lives on in their minds. While the Taliban has pledged to allow older girls' education to continue, with a revised curriculum and adjustments for gender separation, it has yet to make an official announcement.
